Photo Booth Business Statistics 2026

The photo booth rental industry is a $1.2 billion US market made up of roughly 28,000 independent operators delivering an estimated 4.2 million event activations per year. It is growing at about 12% annually, and average revenue per event has risen 18% since 2023 as operators shift toward premium booth types.

This page collects the operator-side numbers — market size, booking values, pricing benchmarks, and booth mix. For guest-facing and wedding data, see our 2026 photo booth statistics and 2025 statistics.

Key Takeaways

  • The US has 231,865 solo photographic-services businesses billing $6.81 billion a year, against 16,049 photography businesses large enough to employ staff. This is an industry of one-person operators. (US Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics and County Business Patterns, 2022)
  • Los Angeles is the largest photography market in the United States, employing 4,290 photographers against New York’s 3,590, and at 2.06 times the national concentration. (BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, 196 metropolitan areas)
  • Los Angeles County alone holds 8,861 solo photography operators, 3.8% of every one-person photography business in the United States. (US Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics, 2022)
  • 51,760 photographers are employed across the US at an average wage of $55,410, alongside 142,860 meeting, convention and event planners averaging $66,520. (BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025)
  • Solo photographic-services operators average roughly $29,400 in annual receipts each, which is why most operators in this industry run it alongside other work. (Calculated from US Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics, 2022)

What the US Government Counts

There is no federal industry code for photo booth rental, so no US agency publishes a photo booth market size. What the government does count is photographic services, the defined category that photo booth operators fall inside. Those counts are below, with the agency and release named for each so any figure can be checked at the source.

The shape of the industry is in the ratio. For every photography business large enough to put someone on payroll, there are roughly fourteen operating solo. Average annual receipts for those solo businesses work out near $29,400, which is why so many operators run this alongside other work, and why booking a company with full-time staff and backup equipment is a genuine differentiator rather than a marketing line.

Los Angeles County holds 8,861 of those solo operators on its own, 3.8% of the national total. See corporate photo booth statistics for the full Los Angeles picture.

Five Year Growth Trend, 2018 to 2022

The Census Bureau publishes this count every year, which makes it the only way to see direction of travel for this industry rather than a single-year snapshot. 2022 is the most recent year released.

Over those five years the number of operators rose 13.7% while their combined receipts rose 39.5%. Revenue growing roughly three times faster than headcount is the opposite of a commoditising market.

2020 is the interesting row. Receipts fell 9.6% while the number of operating businesses rose 0.3%. Operators did not leave, they earned less, and by 2021 receipts had already passed 2019. For a fuller read on where this goes next, see photo booth trends 2027.

Photographers by Metro Area: the 15 Largest US Markets

Photo booth operators are not counted separately by any federal agency, but photographers are, and they are counted metro by metro. The table below ranks the 15 largest of the 196 metropolitan areas the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports on. Concentration is the BLS location quotient: 1.00 means a metro employs exactly the share of photographers its population would predict, and 2.00 means twice that.

Three things stand out. Los Angeles is the largest photography market in the country, employing 700 more photographers than New York. It is also the most concentrated of the major metros at 2.06, matched only by Orlando and Las Vegas, both of which are driven by theme parks and conventions rather than a resident creative industry. And pay varies enormously: San Francisco photographers average $83,790 while Las Vegas averages $40,340, a gap of more than two to one for the same occupation.

For operators, concentration is the number that matters. A high location quotient means more competitors per capita, but it also means a market that already understands and budgets for professional event imaging. See corporate photo booth statistics for what that looks like on the ground in Los Angeles.
