Photo Booth Trends 2027

Heading into 2027, the US photo booth and event imaging industry is growing in revenue faster than it is growing in operators. Federal data shows solo photographic-services businesses rose 13.7% between 2018 and 2022 while their combined receipts rose 39.5% to $6.81 billion. Los Angeles is the exception: its operator count has been effectively flat since 2019, while revenue per operator climbed to $39,567, some 35% above the national figure.

This page is built on US Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics releases, with every figure labelled by agency and year. Where something genuinely cannot be forecast yet, it says so rather than guessing. For current market figures see photo booth business statistics and corporate photo booth statistics.

Key Takeaways

  • US solo photographic-services businesses grew 13.7% between 2018 and 2022, from 203,998 to 231,865, while their combined receipts grew 39.5% to $6.81 billion. (US Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics, 2018 to 2022)
  • Los Angeles County is consolidating, not expanding. Its solo operator count rose just 1.0% between 2019 and 2022 while the national count rose 11.2%. (US Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics, 2019 and 2022)
  • Los Angeles operators bill 35% more than the national average, at $39,567 per operator against $29,359 nationally. (Calculated from US Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics, 2022)
  • The 2020 shock hit revenue, not registrations. National receipts fell 9.6% that year while the number of operating businesses rose 0.3%, meaning operators stayed registered and simply earned less. (US Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics, 2019 and 2020)
  • Average US wedding spend reached $34,200, or $292 per guest, across a survey of 10,474 couples. (The Knot, 2026 Real Weddings Study)
  • Super Bowl LXI falls on Sunday 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, placing the largest corporate activation week in Los Angeles directly on Valentine’s Day. (NFL published schedule)

What the Federal Data Actually Shows

No US agency measures photo booth rental as its own industry, so there is no official photo booth market size and any figure claiming to be one is an estimate. What the Census Bureau does publish every year is the count of photographic-services businesses with no employees, which is the category most photo booth operators fall inside, along with their total receipts. Five years of it below.

2018203,998$4.88B$23,914
2019208,530$5.13B$24,606
2020209,205$4.64B$22,176
2021218,577$5.93B$27,144
2022231,865$6.81B$29,359

Two things are worth pulling out. First, revenue is growing roughly three times faster than the operator count, 39.5% against 13.7%. An industry adding operators faster than revenue would be commoditising; this one is not.

Second, look at 2020. Receipts fell 9.6% while the number of operating businesses rose 0.3%. Operators did not leave the industry that year, they simply earned less, and by 2021 receipts had not only recovered but exceeded 2019. That is a useful thing to know about how this industry behaves under stress, and it is the sort of pattern a single-year market estimate hides completely.

Los Angeles Is Consolidating While the Country Expands

The same Census series, narrowed to Los Angeles County, moves differently from the national figure.

YearBusinessesReceiptsPer operator
20198,777$302.8M$34,501
20218,812$320.7M$36,392
20228,861$350.6M$39,567

Source: US Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics, Los Angeles County, NAICS 54192.

Between 2019 and 2022 the national count of solo photography businesses rose 11.2%. In Los Angeles County it rose 1.0%. Meanwhile receipts in the county rose 15.8% and revenue per operator reached $39,567, roughly 35% above the national average of $29,359.

The plain reading is that Los Angeles is a mature market. The country is still adding photographers; Los Angeles is not, and the operators already there are billing more. For anyone entering the LA market in 2027 that is a harder set of conditions than the national numbers suggest. For anyone booking in it, it means the field is experienced rather than merely crowded.

The 2027 Los Angeles Event Calendar

One date dominates. Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Sunday 14 February 2027, which is Valentine’s Day. That puts the single densest week of corporate brand activation in the Los Angeles calendar directly on top of one of the busiest social event dates of the year, and agencies typically commission activations four to six months ahead, which places the planning window in late 2026.

It also sits in the middle of an unusual run for Southern California: the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl LXI in 2027, and the 2028 Olympic Games. Three consecutive years of major international events in one metro is not a normal baseline, and it is worth separating that effect from underlying market growth when reading any Los Angeles event forecast for this period, including this one.

Detail on that week is on our Super Bowl 2027 photo booth page.

Wedding Budgets Into 2027

The Knot’s 2026 Real Weddings Study, based on a survey of 10,474 couples, put average US wedding spend at $34,200, or $292 per guest. The Bank of America Institute reported wedding spending up 8.5% year to date in 2026 in its June 2026 analysis.

Two structural shifts matter more than the headline number. Guest counts are falling, which pushes per-guest spend up without raising total budgets, and multi-day weddings have become common enough that couples increasingly buy entertainment across a welcome party, the wedding itself, and a farewell brunch rather than as one block on one evening.

For anyone quoting a wedding photo booth in 2027, the practical consequence is that a single three hour block is no longer automatically the right unit to sell or to buy. Current published Los Angeles rates start at $475 for three hours; see pricing for the full current rate card.

Booth Demand: Rising, Holding, Fading

This section is a read of the market rather than a measured statistic, and it is labelled that way deliberately. It reflects what is being requested and what has stopped differentiating a quote.

Rising

Enclosed and vintage formats, trading cards, printed keepsakes and photo keychains, roaming photography, headshot and portrait stations, live on-site customisation

Guests keep the physical object. It leaves the venue and stays on a desk or a fridge.

Holding

360 video booths, AI booths, audio guestbooks

Still widely requested, but now expected rather than remarkable. Reliability and output quality decide the booking.

Fading as a differentiator

Generic open air with a plain backdrop, "we have AI filters" as a headline claim

Baseline expectation. Present on almost every rate card, so it no longer wins a comparison.

The through-line is that the premium has moved from the technology to the takeaway. A guest who leaves with something physical remembers the event differently from one who receives a download link, and that is reflected in what people are willing to pay extra for.

What Cannot Be Forecast Yet

Trend pages tend to state everything with equal confidence. These are the things that genuinely are not knowable at the time of writing, and anyone publishing a 2027 number for them is guessing.

  • Colour and aesthetic direction for late 2027. Pinterest publishes its annual Predicts report in December and its palette in mid-January, so the 2027 to 2028 direction is not available until roughly December 2026.
  • Census business counts beyond 2022. Nonemployer Statistics run about three years behind, so 2023 onward will not be published for some time. Everything on this page about business counts ends at 2022 for that reason.
  • Any US photo booth market size. There is no federal industry code for photo booth rental, so every published market size is a private estimate, and the major research firms disagree with each other substantially.
  • The size of the Super Bowl LXI effect on Los Angeles event pricing. It has no local precedent close enough to model from.

This page will be updated when the December and January releases land.

Photo Booth Trends 2027: Common Questions

Is the photo booth industry growing going into 2027?

By the only federal measure available, yes. US Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics show solo photographic-services businesses rose from 203,998 in 2018 to 231,865 in 2022, a 13.7% increase, while their combined receipts rose 39.5% from $4.88 billion to $6.81 billion. Receipts per operator grew from $23,914 to $29,359 over the same period, so the industry added both operators and revenue, with revenue growing faster.

Is the Los Angeles photo booth market saturated?

Los Angeles is the most concentrated event imaging market in the country, employing 4,290 photographers at 2.06 times the national concentration according to BLS May 2025 data. But it is no longer adding operators. Census figures show solo photographic-services businesses in Los Angeles County grew just 1.0% between 2019 and 2022, from 8,777 to 8,861, against 11.2% nationally. The market is consolidating rather than expanding.

How much will a wedding photo booth cost in 2027?

Published 2026 Los Angeles rates start at $475 for a three hour open air package. Wedding planners are forecasting broader budget inflation into 2027, and The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study put average US wedding spend at $34,200, or $292 per guest. Any 2027 price quoted today is a forecast rather than a published rate, so ask any vendor whether their number is a current rate card or an estimate.

What photo booth types are growing for 2027?

Demand is shifting toward physical, keepable output and enclosed formats, with trading cards and printed keepsakes rising as requested upgrades. AI booths remain in demand as a guest-facing novelty station, though reliability now matters more than novelty. Generic open air with a plain backdrop is increasingly a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator.

What is driving Los Angeles event demand in 2027?

Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Sunday 14 February 2027, which falls on Valentine’s Day. That places the largest corporate activation week in the Los Angeles calendar directly on top of one of the busiest social event dates of the year, and agencies typically book brand activations four to six months ahead.

Sources & Methodology

Business counts and receipts are read directly from US Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics releases for each year shown, using NAICS 54192 Photographic Services, nationally and for Los Angeles County. Receipts are published in thousands of dollars and converted here. Revenue per operator is receipts divided by the establishment count. Employment and wage figures are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Wedding figures are attributed inline to their published studies. Where a figure is a market read rather than a measurement, the page says so at that point.
